Urgent Care

Same-day attention may be needed
if your pet is sick or has a minor injury.
Unfortunately, accidents happen or your companion gets sick.
Animal Cove Pet Hospital provides urgent care services for pets suffering from illnesses and minor injuries that require prompt attention. When your companion isn’t feeling their best, we are here to help with urgent care during our business hours. We accept walk-ins for pet urgent care in Foster City but appreciate a call ahead whenever possible.

When Your Pet Needs Urgent Care

Urgent care addresses non-emergency conditions that should still be seen within 24 hours. If your pet is experiencing discomfort, unusual symptoms, or minor injuries, seeking care quickly can prevent further complications and get them back to feeling better faster. Our veterinarians can treat urgent medical concerns, including:
- Blood in urine, stool, or vomit
- Difficulty passing urine or stool*
- Repeated vomiting or diarrhea
- Ingestion of foreign objects (not causing immediate symptoms)
- Minor wounds, cuts, or abrasions
- Limping or favoring a limb
- Skin infections or hot spots
- Coughing or sneezing that doesn’t resolve
- Loss of appetite or lethargy
- Eye discharge, redness, or squinting
- Crying out in pain or showing signs of distress
*Difficulty passing urine should be treated as an emergency in male cats.
If your pet is displaying concerning symptoms but you are unsure if they need urgent care, give us a call. Our staff will help you determine the best course of action. We can also accommodate some emergency care cases that do not require a full-service emergency facility.

Pet Urgent Care FAQs
What is the difference between urgent care and emergency care for pets?
Urgent care is for conditions that should be addressed within 24 hours and tend to be less severe. Emergency care is for critical situations requiring immediate attention. We do accept both urgent and emergency pet patients at Animal Cove Pet Hospital.
Do I need an appointment for my pet’s urgent care?
No appointment is required for urgent care. We accept walk-ins during business hours. A call ahead is appreciated to let us know that your pet will be coming in.
What should I bring when taking my pet to the vet for urgent care?
If we have not seen your companion before, bring any prior medical records and a list of any medications they are currently taking. Also be prepared to describe your pet’s symptoms. If your pet is having stool issues, you can bring a recent sample if available.
Can you diagnose and treat my pet on the same day?
Yes, with our in-house lab, digital X-rays, and ultrasound, we can perform diagnostics and provide treatment recommendations during your pet’s visit. Please give us a call if your pet needs same-day urgent care.
